Rudzani Matshili

Rudzani Matshili
1994, South Africa

Rudzani Matshili is an active member of Diepsloot township community near Johannesburg, South Africa. On a daily basis she witnesses several protests against the living conditions in her township. This is rather a rule then an exception. Because of this, the impact diminishes. Matshili uses photojournalism to report on and improve the issues facing South Africans and so, contribute to the protest. In her opinion an image is a very powerful tool to deliver the message.

The selection of Matshili’s work was made in cooperation with Pullitzer Price winner Greg Marinovich (the Bang Bang Club). Marinovich about Matshili: “the images of Rudzani Matshili, 17, are raw and photographically naive. As they should be. A young woman who has lived her life in a shantytown known for its crime, it is only her burgeoning vision that is naive; her understanding of the difficulties of life for the poor in a South African settlement is profound.”

Matshili has an unique insiders perspective that she uses to capture the issues and developments in her township. She uses this as a documentary photographer and an activist. Her work has been picked up by such media houses as Mail & Guardian and Al Jazeera.

A part of the proceeds raised from Rudzani’s work are channeled towards her education.
