Djojo & Versteeg

Djojo & Versteeg consists of two artists who formed a duo during their time in art school and is located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Rik Versteeg (26) graduated as a fine-art photographer in 2013 and Danny Djojosoedarmo (22) is a self-educated make-up artist and stylist.

By combining forces, they found a way to complement each other’s skills and create images that capture the essence of human experience and immediately project it into a fantasy realm. The result is marked out with both imagination and a thought-provoking reference to the real world.

“We aim to create esthetic, conceptual and stylized imagery based on social themes. We want the viewer to rethink about issues that you are not likely to think about, by using topics that are currently playing a social role.”

The work of the duo unveils a careful process that can be considered an investigation about the liminal area in which imagination and perceptual reality find an unexpected point of convergence. They aim to show the viewer an undiscovered and subconscious world with their photography. Most of their inspiration is withdrawn from theories, myths, technology and diversity, but most importantly; the way the human being is able to relate to it.

Danny Djojo (22)
Make-up Artist / Stylist

After learning how to draw my first butterfly from my mother, my interest in the arts has been growing ever since. When I was in elementary school, I already knew that I wanted to become an artist so I started working on my ideas in high school.

My path as an artist started forming in 2008 when I was at high school and had the guidance of inspiring teachers. Starting out at art school, I realized school just wasn’t the best place for me. I have been creating and developing my own concepts ever since.

I still draw; being the make-up artist for Djojo & Versteeg. But I’m also responsible for the styling and creative direction. Conceptualizing, creating and visualizing, for me, is a way to keep a serene mind in a chaotic environment.

Rik Versteeg (26)
Photographer

Photography runs in my family and is passed on by different generations. I took my first photograph at the age of 12 and soon discovered this was a clear path for me to take. After graduating from AV-production I was determined to continue my personal development and went to the Willem de Kooning Academy.

After four years of university where I mostly focused on fashion photography I decided to graduate with a conceptual photography series. The main reason for this choice was to create a series that tells a story and was created from the base. For me photography is a way to stimulate the viewer to think about certain issues that they would normally not think about.
